In this new adaptation of the classic Greek tragedy ‘Antigone’ by Naghmeh Samini, Antigone speaks Farsi.
In 2023, Virgule FPAC found a Dutch partner in Altstadt Rotterdam to produce the performance ‘I am Antigone’: A moving story about power, love, justice and rebellion.
In this performance we see Antigone in the solitary cell where Creon has her imprisoned after breaking the law by burying her brother. We see her struggling with herself and her choices as she awaits her execution. The piece plays with the question: What does it mean to be ‘Antigone’ today? Who is she? What language would she speak? What forces are released when you rebel against an immobile system? What choices are made and how far do we go in it? What is the role of the arts in this? And how do we, the viewers, judge?
I am Antigone was written by Samini to be performed bilingually. Partly in Farsi, partly in the local language, with a local theater company. This original version was therefore performed in Dutch and Farsi (Persian) with Dutch and English surtitles.
